AUTUMN
A glorious season, the soft palette of colours of the spring now gives way to a brighter range of orange, red and yellow as if to produce a grand display before the drabness of winter. In the herbaceous borders there are rudbeckias, heleniums, echinacea and dahlias. This is the time of year for the Michaelmas daisies to show their colours from white through pinks, pale purple to almost red.
Here the trees come in to their own, many showing glorious colours but the Nyssa sylvatica really puts on a show turning first butter yellow, orange and finally red. The Acer ‘October Glory’ by the end of October is just a riot of flame, and the last one to lose its leaves well into November is the Liquid Amber.
